There is no better time to learn a second language then when you are a child. You are full of energy, you’re curious about everything, and your brain is like a little sponge, soaking up all the sights and sounds of your day to day early life. The things you learn in your early childhood can stick with you for a lifetime, especially the fun things.
Jolly Phonics is a fun and engaging way to introduce the English language to pre-school aged children. At Amici di Pooh we do Jolly Phonics during our second and third years of scuola materna, but it can be continued well beyond. Sounds, movements, songs, and activities combine to teach the phonetic sounds of the English language. Every week a new sound is introduced along with a new song and new movement. Short songs full of new vocabulary and a body movement as simple as making a finger snake for the sound “s”, or as fun as hopping around the class for the sound “h”, make Jolly Phonics interesting and engaging for our kids. After the sounds and songs are introduced we do a weekly table activity. Using scissors, glue, colors, and following instructions in English we do our activities and put them into our own sound books each week. A moment to stay together at the table, honing our fine motor skills in a full immersion English environment and completing our “projects” give our students a sense of satisfaction usually reserved for the “big kids”.
By the end of our Jolly Phonics course the students will have learned the phonetic sounds of all of the alphabet letters and even the sounds of combined letters like “sh” or “ou”. Combined with the vocabulary from the 36 sound songs which are full of verbs and prepositions, our students will be in pole position to begin blending the sounds together and start reading their first words in English.
“Learning without knowing we are learning” is a result of full immersion Jolly Phonics as practiced at Amici di Pooh.
